The short answer is no. Science is helping us understand the world we live in and the unbelievable complexity of life. Einstein said once ‘“The eternal mystery of the world is its comprehensibility. The fact that it is comprehensible is a miracle.”

For both the athiest and the Christian believer the question of how the world came to be is still a matter of faith. For the Christian, the incredible complexity of life in itself points to a designer, so again it is worth exploring what Christians believe and why they believe it. Many scientists are convinced of God’s existence and you can read what Francis Collins, the scientist who led the Human Genome Project from 1990-2003, has to say in his book ‘The Language of God: A Scientist Presents Evidence for Belief.’

The Bible gives it’s own explanation but it also calls for faith: “Faith shows the reality of what we hope for; it is the evidence of things we cannot see. Through their faith, the people in days of old earned a good reputation. By faith we understand that the entire universe was formed at God’s command, that what we now see did not come from anything that can be seen.” (Hebrews 11:1-3)

The Bible is made up of two parts, the Old Testament, which was written in Hebrew and consists of 39 books. It tells the story of how God created the world and had a special relationship with human beings who were made in his image. Sadly, the Old Testament also tells how that perfect relationship broke down and goes on to tell how God sought to restore our relationship with him through the ultimate promise of a Messiah, a unique individual who would be able to bridge the gap between the two parties.

The second part of the Bible, the New Testament, was written in Greek and consists of 27 books. It tells how Jesus was born, lived a perfect life, died on the cross and was raised again from the dead. It is a story about redemption, its a story about hope, about how we can discover why we are here, that there is a creator, that he cares about us and that he can give meaning to our lives.

There is a verse in the Bible, which speaks of why it is such a powerful book: “The Word of God is much sharper than a surgeon’s scalpel, it cuts through our superficial masks and gets right to the heart of things, matters of the soul and the spirit” (Hebrews 4:12, paraphrased)

First of all, the church is not a building it is a community of people who have become followers of Jesus. When we get together we want to worship God, so we sing songs of praise, some are traditional hymns and others are more contemporary. We stand when we sing but there is no obligation to stand, nor to sing as we welcome all visitors and it can be a good starting point for anyone wanting to explore the Christian faith. The service is made up of Bible readings, prayers and a relevant message on what the Bible teaches. The service lasts about an hour and anyone is welcome to attend. Afterwards, there is an opportunity to chat over some tea or coffee.

“You are like living stones that God is placing within a spiritual cathedral that he is building and because of what Jesus Christ has done, you can offer spiritual sacrifices that please God.” (1 Peter 2:5, paraphrased)

Becoming a Christian involves a major u- turn in our thinking so that we put God first. It begins with a recognition that we need God, that we are separated from him, that we can do nothing to win God’s approval and that we need Jesus to restore our relationship with God.
